Who is the Literacy Studio for?

Literacy Studio supports learners from early childhood through middle school who are developing (or strengthening) core reading and writing skills, including:

  • Children who are just beginning to learn how print letters/words and how letters connect to sounds.

  • Growing readers who need targeted support in decoding, fluency, or spelling.

  • Students who can read but struggle with comprehension, written expression, or confidence.

  • Learners who benefit from explicit, structured instruction to feel successful and independent as readers and writers.

If you’re unsure whether your child is the right fit, you’re always welcome to reach out, I’m happy to talk through your child’s needs.

Our Approach

Each session includes a brief check-in, targeted skill practice, and time to apply new learning in reading and writing. Lessons follow a predictable structure (review, explicit teaching, guided practice, independent application) so children know what to expect and can focus on learning.

Instruction is explicit, systematic, and cumulative: each lesson builds on what your child already knows, fills in gaps, and extends skills in a logical sequence. Teaching is also diagnostic and responsive - ongoing observation and quick checks guide what comes next, so time is spent where it matters most.

Skills We Intentionally Target

  • Phonological and phonemic awareness: playing with sounds in words so reading and spelling have a strong foundation.

  • Decoding and encoding (phonics and spelling): step-by-step instruction in how letters and patterns represent sounds, with practice applying these skills in real reading and writing.

  • Fluency: guided practice to build accuracy, rate, and expression so reading feels smoother and more automatic.

  • Automaticity: strategically applying what we know about reading fundamentals and transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn”.

  • Vocabulary and language: rich conversation, read-alouds, and word study to deepen understanding of language. Here, we delve deep in the etymology of words, learn how to strategically use context clues and expand readers’ word bank.

  • Comprehension and written expression: modeling and practicing strategies that help children make sense of what they read and clearly express their ideas in writing.
